Tips on Hat Wearing

I am frequently asked about hat wearing, & in particular, which hats stand out to me from each decade  & how to pair them with vintage/modern finds.
Well, my dears, here are my favorites from the 1920s-1970s.

Vilma Banky circa 1920s, sporting a cloche. Cloches can be worn with just about anything, & make your hair look so pretty (just a peek, that's all!) Think denim & sweaters, or simple dresses.

Greta Garbo circa 1930s, wearing a head scarf. Ladies, these are so easy to learn & look gorgeous/chic/effortless. You can use a newer scarf, but the vintage ones tend to have a romantic look from age.

Lana Turner circa 1940s, showing off a structured pom pom hat. I love this outfit exactly as it is (suit, hat, scarf) but these pretty 40s hats can be worn with cocktail dresses or more casual outfits as well (think high waist denim & sweet blouses). The 40s are my personal favorite for headwear. So architectural! So fabulous!

Marilyn Monroe circa 1950s, sporting a birdcage veil. This may be the most elusive hat to some of you. I am often asked how to wear it, & really it just depends on what you like. I adore the way Marilyn wears it back over her updo. You can also wear it partially over your face, or affixed to a chignon.

Brigitte Bardot circa 1960s, wearing a simple bow headband. This may be one of the easiest & sweetest looks to pull off. Wear it a bit farther back on the head, add height at the crown with back combing & you're all set.

Jane Birkin circa 1970s, donning a newsboy cap. Ah, I love everything about this photo. The menswear, the sneakers, the big grin. I would recommend channeling Jane here, but to dress it up perhaps add a wool skirt instead of pants, or a peter pan collar blouse under a more fitted sweater.
